Our names carry memories of stories of love and heartbreak, births and farewells, prosperity and war, exile and silence. Our individual histories are intimately interwoven with collective history. We are not isolated beings, either in space or in time.
Naming the Unnameable (working title) is a theatrical ceremony, a performative ritual, a work situated within the field of new dramaturgies. Combining live music, poetry, prayer and performance, it creates a participatory space for memory and recognition—giving voice to what history has sought, and continues to seek, to erase, while also making room for that which no words can contain.
At its centre is La Tarara—an untamed, wild woman who defies classification. Perhaps Sephardic. Perhaps Andalusi. Perhaps Aragonese. Or perhaps she embodies all these memories at once. She crosses the boundaries between cultures, religions and eras to restore words to what has been silenced and to remind us that not everything essential can be expressed. The piece invites the audience to cross a threshold between naming and silence, memory and oblivion, offering an experience in which the act of recognition becomes a form of freedom.
