Tslil Tsemet

Tslil Tsemet, born in 1988 in Nahariya, Israel, grew up in a war zone near the Lebanon border. She began painting at three, integrating surprising, thought-provoking concepts into her art. From ages 12 to 18, she studied at a democratic, experimental open school fostering free expression and activism.

A graduate of the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem (BFA in conceptual art), Tslil’s work reflects her complex experiences of cultural and religious fusion in hyper-politically charged environments. After living and creating in Tel Aviv, censorship in Israel pushed her to immigrate to the U.S. in 2014 to pursue art full-time. Tslil has worked as a tattoo artist to support her practice and recently earned an

MFA from the New York Academy of Art. Her art, shown in galleries and museums across the U.S., Europe, and Israel, challenges social structures and explores themes of identity and resistance.

Projects vision

For my project at LABA, I plan to create a series of paintings exploring the complexities of Jewish identity in the diaspora, particularly in the context of rising anti-Semitism. This body of work will delve into the intricate interplay between cultural heritage, religious identity, and the challenges of existing as a minority group. Additionally, the project will address the intersection of these struggles with the broader context of global conflicts and power struggles (including Israel). Through layered imagery and narratives, my paintings aim to capture the tensions and resilience within Jewish communities while fostering dialogue about the broader implications of identity, belonging, and collective responsibility in today’s fractured world.
