The story of Adam and Eve conjures up so many dichotomies, so many grounds for sexism and for feminism, as well as awareness of the fallibility of all humans. It also gives us the first taste of transgender or gender fluidity when the Torah speaks both “male and female” as created in God’s image:
So God created mankind in his own image,
Genesis 1:27
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.
I am struck by these words as they are a reminder, from day one, of the gender fluidity of human life.
It is with this understanding that I’m thrilled to share that out series, #Nasty Women: Night of Female Resistance Comedy will transform — first to #Nasty Women+ and likely next season to #Nasty Folx.
While our world, especially with the hate-filled and intolerant leadership both domestically and internationally, continues to demean any but the most rigid forms of gender expression, it is my hope that an understanding will emerge, rooted in theology, of humankind beginning as both male and female.
As we now prepare for the holiday of Purim, where we are commanded to be so drunk we don’t know the difference between right and wrong, let’s at least be right about inclusion and awareness. After all, Adam and Eve was less a he and she than a they.
And join us on April 15 for #Nasty Women+ featuring intrepid host Amanda Duarte and the tremendous talent of Daphne Always, Becca Blackwell, Briana Sakamoto and Jes Tom! Buy your tickets now.
